Restoration of the Treasures of the National Library of the Czech Republic or the Secrets of the Restorer's Work

The exhibition takes visitors to the world of restoration and permanent preservation of original books in order to save them for future generations. Featured are different professions, like restorer, conservator, bookbinder, microbiologist, restoration technologist, climatologist etc., as well as the history of the book collections´ preservation and personalities, who were at the birth of this field. Displayed are tools and special materials used in restoration and conservation. The exhibition presents examples of specific complex restorer´s interventions in historical books including a wide range of restoration procedures.

The Plastic Age In Bookbinding
4 August – 8 October, 2022
The exhibition brings visitors closer to the issues of the care of books with synthetic elements. Featured are examples of the use of plastics in bookbinding, replacement of natural materials and the production and processing of plastics in general. Much attention is paid to degradation processes of plastics, especially the release of volatile substances and plasticizers, which endanger the physical condition of adjacent books.

The Secret of Books
3 June – 3 September 2022
Presentation of results of professional research of manuscripts and printed books using special recording devices and light sources as well as X-rays. It is focused mainly on examples of image records of elements hidden in bookbinding or in the used book materials. It presents visualizations of information invisible to the naked eye.
The exhibition has been organized as the main result of NAKI II Project of the Ministry of Culture of the CR entitled Use of Imaging Techniques For the Study of Hidden Information In Bookbinding.
